Youngster wins London Schools crown

Five Star youngster Tony O’Brien was crowned London Schools champion at under-48kg at Feltham on Sunday.

O’Brien enjoyed a tough but convincing win against Twickenham’s previously unbeaten Oliver Wilkins to the delight of trainer and club matchmaker Eddie Kelly, who said: “Tony has come on leaps and bounds and trains so hard.

“He joins a very long list of Five Star champions and it is always an honour to be crowned London champion because it is an area rich in quality and quantity of boxers.

“It will take a good boxer to stop Tony going onwards in this competition.”

The bout started evenly with both boxers moving and defending well, but O’Brien soon moved up a level to connect with some well-timed shots.

O’Brien continued to dominate in the second round and caught his opponent a few more times while blocking any countering attempts.

And he showed his fitness in the final round, finishing the stronger of the two as the judges gave a unanimous decision.

O’Brien will now go up against the Western Counties champion in the national quarter-finals, which are being held at Cornwall’s Bodmin club on March 23.
