Young boxers reutrn with medals

Hornchurch & Elm Park youngsters returned with two golds and a silver from a three-day event in Sweden.

Kristian Papis, 13, beat opponents from England and Iceland on points to reach the 45kg final, where he also outpointed a local fighter.

And it completed a remarkable week for Papis, who had won two fights in the days leading up to the squad’s departure.

National schoolboys champion Sonny Ali got a majority verdict against his first Swedish rival, before earning a unanimous decision against an Irish youngster at 39kg.

And he claimed gold after another split decision against another Swede.

Maria Markowska had to step up to 52kg and face an older opponent, who turned out to be a no.1 ranked fighter in Norway.

But she produced an excellent display and was only edged out of the gold medal by a one-point margin.

Hornchurch host their next club show at Chafford on November 24.

Entry is £10 adults and £5 concessions with the action getting underway at 1pm.
