Havering Indoor bowler is still playing at 100!!
If there ever was proof that bowls is for any age and anything can be achieved then it came down at the Havering Indoor Bowls Club, writes Dave Evans.
It was celebration time last week at the Harrow Lodge club when one of their founder members reached a remarkable milestone.
There seems to be nothing to stop Joan Peters from getting on to the greens as last week she celebrated her 100th birthday – and she is still playing!
Joan started playing the game in Mersea Island back in 1978 with her husband Leslie. He sadly passed away, but Joan moved to play for the Rainham outdoors club, where she still treads the green in the summer months.
In 1988, when Havering Indoor Bowls Club was formed, Joan became a member and she is still there playing in the leagues during the winter.
And to celebrate her latest milestone, she was invited down to the club in Hornchurch where she received a presentation from club president Dave Faust, ladies captain Ann Aston and secretary Tom Bellamy in the presence of many fellow club members.
When asked the secret of her long life Joan revealed: “I keep running so they can’t catch me!”
Something for us all to follow surely.
Happy Birthday Joan and here’s to many more matches in the future!
