Defenceman set to come ‘home’
Young British defenceman Billy Phillips looks all set to return to a Romford Raiders jersey.
Phillips sprang to prominence at Rom Valley Way in the second half of the 2008/09 season under former coach Jesse Hammill, but moved to EPL rivals Slough when uncertainty surrounded the future of the Raiders.
The former Emerson Park pupil helped the Jets win the play-off crown in Coventry last April, but now looks set to return to his home-town club.
No official announcement has yet been made by the Raiders organisation, but a statement made today, claiming to be from Billy, and his dad Terry, said: “Billy has had a great time at Slough. He has enjoyed playing with one of the best teams in the EPL, with the highlight obviously being winning the play-offs last season.
“He has been lucky enough to have plenty of ice time on all three lines but feels he now needs to gain more powerplay and penalty-kill experience which is why he is going back to play with Romford on a two-way with the Jets.
“His full-time job is also needing more attention and he is finding the travelling to Slough for training is getting too much.
“I would like to say a big thank you to Peter [Russell], the players and the fans for making Billy welcome and for understanding the hard decision he has now had to make.”
