Big Cats discover opponents for January date in competition

It may only be July, but Essex Leopards know they will host Manchester Giants in the BBL Trophy quarter-final on January 6 2017 after the draw was made last week.

The fixtures marks a return to the Brentwood Centre for Giants coach Yorick Williams who played with the original Big Cats during their final season in 2002/03, when he was a team mate of current Leopards boss Steve Ogunjimi.

It will also be the first meeting between the new Essex and Manchester, though the final game for the original giants was a heavy defeat away to the Big Cats at the Brentwood Centre.

Leopards hae been invited in the league cup competition for the 10th time in their 13-year history, and general manager Dave Ryan is happy to be involved once again.

“It will be good to test ourselves against BBL competition again, we’re proud to have been invited into the competition more than any other non-BBL team,” he said.

“We’d like to thank Brentwood Leisure Trust for their help in ensuring that we can again enter the competition. It’ll be good to host Giants, and those of us who’ve been around long to remember him playing for Leopards will be pleased to Yorick back at Brentwood.”
