Upminster pupils book national final spot

Coopers Coborn pupil celebrated some excellent results at the North Thames regional final of the National Cross Country Cup.

Competing against the best schools from Essex, Hertfordshire, Middlesex and London, they saw their intermediate girls squad finish second overall to book a place at the grand in Bolton later this month.

Isobel Ives was first to cross the line, with Lois Wyatt not far behind in eighth place.

Jessica Ward (16th), Megan Kelly (20th), Amy Baggs (22nd) and Hannah Binning (66th) completed the line-up for Coopers and head of student enrichment Mark Duncan said: “This was a great result. They have been training hard for a number of years now and hope to go one better than last year’s second place finish nationally.

“We wish the girls every success on the national stage.”

Flynn Astbury, Oliver Morter, Thomas Keevil and Ted Buchanan brought the junior boys squad home in a fine fourth place, in a field of 15 schools, with Rebecca Brown, Emily Marshall, Katie Mitchell and Annalie Tanner repeating that feat in the junior girls race.

Coopers’ young intermediate boys squad showed much promise for the future, as Elliott Nunn, Jake Brocklebank, Jonathan Toolis and Liam Batty came home in a commendable seventh place.
