Hornchurch pupils prove best in Havering
Campion won three out of four age groups and took the overall boys title at the Havering Athletics Championships last week.
The Hornchurch School would have completed a clean sweep, had the Year 8 boys relay team not been disqualified, denying them their title.
But they can boast 18 borough champions, after a superb day of track and field.
Adam Okafor won the Year 7 100m and long jump, while Femi Seki took the shot and 200m, having won an Essex title earlier this year.
Cian Hammond won the 800m, before Michael Olaniyan, Seki, Adam Higgens and Okafor broke the school’s 4x100m relay record with a winning time of 53.4secs.
There were Year 8 wins for Sam Pearlman (400m), Joe Gill (1,500m) and Denzil Ofri Boateng (long jump), while George Adams (80m hurdles), Thomas Pitkin (400m), Tom Saunders (1,500m), Timi Olatunji-Oyelaja (high jump) and Joe Howe (shot) added Year 9 wins.
Jordan Mensah Minta, Michael Osbourne, Aaron O’Donoghue and Leon Appiah combined to break a 30-year-old school record in the 4x100m relay, clocking 47.2secs for victory.
For the Year 10s, Ryan Pettit took the 100m hurdles and Ross Ozongwu the 100m, with Tom Barrett winning the javelin.
George Hobborough, Dan Browne, Dan Nugent and Ozongwu clocked an impressed 46.0secs to win the 4x100m relay in another school record, beating a mark that had stood for 21 years.
