Matt Blacklock was the pick of a trio of St Martin’s students who impressed on Essex duty at the South Eastern Inter-Counties Cross Country Championships.

Blacklock travelled to Reigate in Surrey to represent the county, as did fellow St Martin’s pupils Freya Godfrey and Dan Houchell.

In the year seven boys’ race, Blacklock led for much of the 3.2k course, but up against some outstanding prospects, he still came a highly impressive third.

Godfrey, meanwhile, was taking part in the year seven girls’ race, where she finished in a very creditable 41st.

Houchell was the eldest of the St Martin’s trio, competing in the year eight boys’ event and finishing in 58th.

“For three of our students to represent Essex at this competitive level is brilliant and a real testament to their hard work and positive attitude to training throughout the season,” said Chris Warburton, head of athletics at St Martin’s School.
