Leaking covers mean game is a wash-out

Wanstead CC skipper Arfan Akram spoke of his disappointment at the abandonment of Saturday’s Essex League fixture at Upminster.

“It’s very disaapointing,” he said, “you play at a ground with covers, such as Upminster, and don’t expect to have this sort of problem.

“It’s just one of those things, though, the covers had a hole in them and water had leaked through on to the wicket.

“We couldn’t start, the umpires deemed it unfit for play, and you just have to respect their decision.”

Akram knew it was definately not Wanstead’s day, though, with what happened next.

“Having waited around, we attempted to start the match at four o’clock,” he said. “But, just as we were about to take the field, the heavens opened and that was that. Sod’s Law I guess you call it.”

With Brentwood’s win against Ilford on Saturday leapfrogging them to top spot in the league ahead of the Herons, Akram added: “I’m not too concerned. It’s important that we’re in the pack for the final games of the season.

“We’re halfway through the season, so we have to keep the momentum going and keep our focus.”
