Archant London sports reporter and former London Raiders forward Jacob Ranson is guesting for Algerian side HC Alger Corsaires at the 2018 Arab Cup in Abu Dhabi and writing a blog about the experience.

With a day off midway through the tournament, I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to head off to Dubai and explore.

Catching a cab straight from the hotel to Dubai’s major bus station, before using the metro system, I managed to get lost on my way to the Dubai Mall and ending up at the Mall of Emirates instead.

After a quick look around I realised it was the wrong mall so got back on the metro and went to get to the Burj Khalifa station.

Once at the Burj I explored the mall, finding the Dubai ice rink inside and what a rink to have in the middle as well.

Then back outside I gazed up at the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa itself, before treating myself to one of my Canadian favourites – a Tim Horton’s coffee in the sun.

The mall was probably the most impressive I’ve ever seen, even having its own aquarium in the middle.

After leaving the mall it was time for a city bus tour that visited the main sites Jumeira beach, the Palm and the Marina. All amazing places to see I must say.

At the beach I went for a swim and a walk before heading to the Palm, where most celebrities stay when they visit.

Exploring the man-made island of the Palm was great fun and I felt I deserved a beer-stop during my visit.

Then it was off to the Marina for some more sightseeing before getting a bus back to the major bus station for a cab back to Abu Dhabi.

I’d say after that trip Dubai is one of the coolest places in the world and a must visit.

But today, it’s back to hockey and we face Egypt, who have also lost their opening two matches.
