Falcon fighter adds to haul
Romford’s Falcon Kickboxing Club had more to celebrate as Liam Wells added the Five Nations IKF light welterweight belt to his world title by unanimously defeating Irishman James Dunphy on Sunday.
The atmosphere was electric at a packed Rochester arena as both fighters – having traded blows on social media prior to the bout – received a rapturous reception from the crowd.
Dunphy was unwilling to touch gloves before the bell and showed more aggression at the start, but Wells used his footwork well to make himself an impossible target to hit.
World champion Wells let loose midway through the second round with a barrage of shots, each one more successful than the last.
Dunphy’s legs began to wobble and a near perfectly timed left-hand forced him onto the canvas, but he just managed to beat the count.
The third round began as the second had finished with Wells on the offensive, but Dunphy refused to go down, calling on Wells to give more.
The fourth saw yet more punishment for the granite chinned Dunphy, who kept coming forward and took more punishment before Wells, in the final round, floored his rival again with a spinning kick to the jaw.
Dunphy beat the count and survived until the bell in a memorable contest, but there was no denying Wells his latest win.
