Romford Walking Football Club enjoyed a highly successful outing at Billericay FC as both the over 60s and over 70s teams delivered impressive performances in the Essex Walking Football League.
Romford’s over 60s side, made up of Neil Clements, Dave Snook, Mick Harris, Paul Browne, Dave Gregory, Dave King, Peter Henley and Sean Mallet, were in action for their second round of First Division fixtures and produced a perfect day to remain firmly in the promotion hunt.
The opening match saw Romford ease to a 3-0 victory against Southend, with joint manager King joined on the scoresheet by Henley and Snook.
That was followed by a hard‑fought 1-0 win against last season’s champions Blackmore Athletic, with Gregory scoring the decisive goal in a tightly contested match.
Romford made it three wins from three with another narrow success against Beacon Hill, this time Browne finding the net to seal a 1-0 victory.
The final game of the day saw Gregory strike again as Romford edged past Concord Rangers 1-0, securing a fourth consecutive win to keep the club second in the table.
Romford dominated across all four matches, creating a wealth of chances and showing strong teamwork throughout.
Goalkeeper Neil Clements earned special praise, expecting to be a spectator before stepping in confidently.
Romford’s over 70s team began their Essex Walking Football League Second Division campaign at the same venue and also made an excellent start.
Chris Woolf, Ray Sapsford, Keith Rogers, Liam Crowley, Kevin Dignam, Ian Weaver, Steve Barrett, Bob Williams and John Noble opened with a close contest against the hosts Billericay, which ended in a goalless draw after a well‑balanced encounter.
Romford then took on Heybridge Swifts and produced a dominant display, only to be frustrated by an outstanding performance from the opposition goalkeeper.
The breakthrough eventually came when Crowley unleashed a superb strike into the top corner to secure a deserved 1-0 win.
The final match against Chelmsford City followed a similar pattern, with Romford probing patiently against another resilient defence. A well‑worked move allowed Noble to find the net for the only goal, sealing another 1-0 victory.
With seven points from three matches and three clean sheets, Romford’s over 70s side made an encouraging start and will look to build on the momentum as the season progresses, rounding off a very positive day for Romford Walking Football Club as a whole.
