Romford boss Dan Spinks pointed to the positives despite conceding in the last minute as Boro lost 1-0 at Buckhurst Hill on Saturday.

Spinks’ side, who sit second in the Essex Senior League and face a cup game against Saffron Walden tonight (Monday), dominated most of the game but couldn’t find the breakthrough.

And the boss called for calm ahead of a huge week.

“It was just one of those days to be honest. I thought we started a little bit flat, and as they’ve got something to hold on to, the game’s gone,” said Spinks.

“We kept putting balls in the box, but nothing really came of it. As I say, it’s just one of those days. I think if it went down again, we’d probably win the game, but ultimately it’s turned out like that and we’ll have to go on to Monday now.

"We’ve still got two league games left and we’ll try and pick up maximum points to confirm that we get second.

"We’ve got a semi-final in the League Cup, so that’s something to look forward to and then we’ve got the Wembley one in two weeks’ time and play-offs in between, so there’s still loads to play for.

"I can’t be too disappointed as they’ve won 11 or 12 on the spin, so it is what it is today. It’s just one of those games basically.”

Spinks’ men will make the trip to face Saffron Walden in the Errington Challenge Cup this evening, with the Romford boss coy on what changes he might implement to overcome their Essex-based counterparts.

“There will be a change of personnel for sure. It’s hard for the boys to go on Saturday and Monday, but a few of them are going to have to job for me,” he added.

“I think Saffron will have the same problem. They’ve played today as well [beating Great Wakering Rover 4-3].

"Finishing, to be honest with you, putting the ball in the back of the net. We missed a hatful of chances on Wednesday night [against Athletic Newham]. We scored four so we got away with it.

"We missed a hatful of chances today and scored none, so ultimately if you put one or two of them away it’s a different game and we’re talking about winning two or three nil afterwards, but that’s football.

"It’s small margins and I explained to the boys in there, no matter who you’re playing against you’ve got to be at it every week in this league and today I felt we were just five or ten per cent below our par”.

The cup fixture against Saffron Walden is quickly followed up by another key league fixture against Woodford on Wednesday as Boro count down the days to their trip to Wembley for the FA Vase final on May 11.
