Romford Buccaneers head coach Jason Buckman felt there were plenty of positives to take from their first weekend of the National League Division One South season.

They slipped to a 4-2 home defeat against defending champions Streatham on Saturday, before conceding three final-period goals to go down 7-3 at Invicta the following night.

But Buckman was pleased with what he saw from his young squad.

"Tough weekend of results, but a lot of positives to come from it," he said.

"I’m pretty sure a lot of the league would’ve written this team off already, but I think we showed Saturday against Streatham we can compete with the best of them.

"A conceded shorthanded goal, and Brynley Capps hitting the bar with an opportunity, was the difference in the game which could’ve ended 3-3.

"The guys can be really proud of their performance Saturday and hopefully use that as a basis for performances moving forward.

"Sunday's game in Gillingham, again we had some promising moments of play, but ultimately four or five bad defensive zone errors resulted in goals, which we have to learn from and minimise in future games."

Captain Thomas Wilson and Brynley Capps netted powerplay goals against Streatham, who dominated the shot count 39-19, with Joe Tomalin, Sam Austin and Capps on target as they were outshot 56-30 by Dynamos.

And Buccaneers face another double-header this weekend as they host Chelmsford on Saturday (5.15pm), before visiting MK Thunder the following evening.

"Overall really happy with the performance on Saturday and parts of Sunday," added Buckman.

"Hopefully this team can build some belief and desire to compete in every game we play this year.

"They can only grow in confidence from what they showed this weekend and realise if everybody buys in to the Romford way with hard work and passion we can compete with everybody.

"We will review the goals from the weekend and address some plays in training this week, and look forward to the Essex derby next Saturday with confidence."
