Athletic Newham booked their place in the next round of the FA Cup with replay success at Tooting & Mitcham United.

And Essex Senior League rivals Romford made it four successive wins in all competitions when beating Great Wakering Rovers to bank three more points.

But landlords Barking lost at home to Tilbury, while Sporting Bengal United were beaten on penalties in their FA Cup replay at Stansfeld on a night of mixed fortunes for local clubs.

Athletic had come from three goals down with 15 minutes left - after Jacques Leurs was sent off - to draw their extra preliminary round tie 3-3 at the weekend thanks to a Richard Kone hat-trick.

But they saw an early penalty, awarded for a foul on Daniel Izekor, saved in south London before Kone cut in from the right to open the scoring moments later.

Joel Appiah doubled the advantage before the break, with Kone setting up Izekor for the third straight from the restart.

Appiah beat two defenders to tee up Kone for a top-corner finish for the fourth, before the hosts hit back through Shawn Lyle and added a second from the penalty spot.

But there would be no further scoring as Athletic claimed a 4-2 win and a home tie with Westfield in the preliminary round on August 19.

Boss Chris Davis said: "Good performance from the lads but it should have been a lot more comfortable than it was in the end due to the amount of chances we had to extend our lead in the game.

"But we are in the next round which is the important thing and we now shift our focus back into the league."

Romford had secured their progress with a 4-1 win at Halstead on Saturday and returned to league action at Burroughs Park.

And they took the lead after nine minutes when Jordan Sarfo ran onto Kris Newby's pass and foud Junior Luke, who beat Luis Shamshoum at the far post.

Jake Anderson made his first notable save to deny Connor Hart, then punched away an Oliver Jenkins effort, before Luke deflected the ball into his own net and was reprieved by an offside flag.

Boro's Michael Turner had a header cleared off the line from Luke's throw and Jayden Silcott-Brown had penalty claims turned down before forcing Shamshoum into a save and seeing Harrison Georgiou head over.

The visitors doubled their lead just before half-time, though, when Hassan Nalbant's shot was blocked by Shamshoum and Sarfo converted.

And it was 3-0 five minutes into the second half when Sarfo's shot was blocked and Newby's corner found Turner for a powerful headed finish.

Wakering hit back through Jake Gordon's chip over Anderson and set up a tense finale when Jay Nash found the net late on with a looping header.

But Romford held on to remain top of the early standings, while Barking suffered a 2-0 home loss to Tilbury.

Blues had secured FA Cup progress at Cockfosters on Saturday, but fell behind on 71 minutes as Tom Salter fired past Harry Girling from 25 yards.

And the Dockers sealed the points six minutes later when Brian Moses found Johnny Ashman for a left-footed finish into the top corner.

Sporting Bengal had rallied from three down to draw 4-4 with Stansfeld at Mile End Stadium at the weekend, but fell behind midway through the second half as Callum Keeble put the Kent club in front.

The visitors levelled in the last minute of injury time through Alagi Juwara to force penalties but lost 6-5 in the shoot-out.

Wednesday night's action sees Redbridge take on New Salamis in an FA Cup replay, while Woodford Town host White Ensign in the Essex Senior League.

Barkingside welcome May & Baker in a Thurlow Nunn League cup tie, as Tower Hamlets head to Cannons Wood, Hackney Wick host Holland and Division One South's top two Hutton and Clapton Community meet at Billericay Town's New Lodge ground.
