As Brentwood RLFC approaches its 20-year anniversary, the adult team enter uncharted waters as they prepare for their historic entry into the prestigious Challenge Cup this weekend.

The competition remains a jewel in the crown for the BBC, with the Challenge Cup running since 1896, and the final returns to its spiritual home at Wembley Stadium this season.

Brentwood entertain Bedford at Old Brentwoods, Ashwells Road on Saturday (1.30pm) and the club’s invitation into this competition is testament to the work of all the players, coaching team and those who work tirelessly behind the scenes.

“This is a very proud moment for those connected with the club as we are all aware of the history attached to this event," said Club President Carl Horsman.

"It is hard to believe that a brief e-mail conversation I had back in 2013 with the now club chairman Anthony Sherwood to form an adult side, now sees us competing on such a huge stage.

"Watching the draw take place at Wembley Stadium and seeing our club mentioned was a really surreal moment. As a club we have produced a number of players who now ply their trade in the professional ranks, but this is probably our club’s proudest moment.

"I’m sure we didn’t expect to be playing in such a competition when we started out, but I’m sure all those players taking the field of play will be realising a dream."

Club chairman Anthony Sherwood added: "I’ve worked with these guys for a number of years and to have such a young squad, with many coming from our Junior and Youth sections really demonstrates our commitment to player development.

"To have had such a great first season in the top amateur league and then receive this invitation is the stuff of dreams. We have built slowly over the years with a few of the boys receiving their caps for 50 appearances in recent seasons so this is a great reward for them."

The club also wishes all the best for ex-Brentwood boys Rian Horsman and Alex Walker who are about to start another season in the pro ranks with the London Broncos.
