A large, fresh leek won the top prize for vegetables at the Elm Park Horticultural Guild’s autumn flower show on Saturday.

It was David Willox’s magnificent green specimen which scooped the gong, at the quarterly event at The Assembly Hall, in Eyhurst Avenue, Elm Park.

Richard Mummery, the guild’s publicity officer, explained the autumn show mainly focused dahlias and gladioli.

Brian Harwood won the top flower prize for his colourful gladioli, which were over a metre high.

“There was great weather, and it was a really nice event, with around 200 people attending,” Richard said.

“As well as the flowers and the vegetables, we also had stalls selling home made local goods.

“Lots of people enjoyed the homemade cakes and coffee.”

The Horticultural Guild holds four shows each year, with the winter edition taking place on November 4.

As this is the club’s 80th birthday, Richard explained the Deputy Mayor of Havering Cllr Dilip Patel will be in attendance.
