FLY-TIPPING, the bane of all our lives, moved on to a new level in Newham this week with a night-time operation that the SAS would have been proud of.
Families in Cranberry Lane, Canning Town, could not believe their eyes on Thursday morning when they woke to find around 300 tyres had been dumped under cover of darkness, blocking the road and pavement and preventing people leaving their homes in the road and a housing estate off Manor Road.
One of many residents who rang the Recorder told us: "This was absolutely incredible. My partner came home at just before midnight and the road was clear. When we woke up and went to go to work we found the road blocked. It beggars belief."
Families called the police and Newham Council for help and some took matters into their own hands by moving enough of the tyres to allow smaller vehicles to squeeze by.
Later some residents cleared enough space along the 100ft stretch of tyres to allow schoolchildren and parents to walk past.
