A STUDENT from Romford is in the running for a very special role in the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Esme Sackey, 17, from Havering Gardens, is one of more than 20,000 people hoping to lend a helping hand to visitors arriving from across the world at airports, stations and in the centre of town during the extraordinary summer.
Known as London Ambassadors, the chosen 8,000 will provide visitors with information on how to get to specific places, such as competition venues and the outdoor screens broadcasting the Games, as well as museums, theatres, restaurants and shopping districts.
In return Ambassadors, hired by London Mayor Boris Johnson, will receive training, free travel, food and a uniform.
Fashion student Esme registered her interest in the role after receiving a letter about the scheme at Barking and Dagenham College, where she is a fashion student.
“When I heard about the scheme I thought it was just too good to be true,” said Esme. “To have the chance to represent young people by being an Ambassador in London would just be amazing. I think I am a good team leader and hopefully I’ve got the qualities they are looking for.”
She added: “Often young people get a bad rap. But it’s important to remember that there are some really good kids out there and I think that the Ambassador’s scheme is something they’d really get something out of.”
The Mayor is now encouraging more people to sign up, before the finalists are chosen in the new year.
He said: “Being part of the Games is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and I don’t want anyone to let that chance pass them by. Your age, ability and experience don’t matter; if you know and love London then being an Ambassador is the perfect role for you!”
