A woman escaped death by inches when a lamppost came down in the weekend’s high winds, hitting the car she was sitting in.
The storm brought down three lampposts in Dagnam Park Drive, Harold Hill, on Friday night.
Olivia Evans, 18, of Brentwood, was parked opposite her boyfriend’s house. Fortunately she was sitting in the other side of the Volkswagon Golf.
She said: “Normally I park facing the other way around. It could have fallen on me – I was shocked and angry.”
Tom Gray, 75, who lives in the road, said he reported to the council that one of the lampposts was “out of kilter” by 15 degrees the day before.
He said two men “pummelled” the post back down, but on Friday morning one of his neighbours reported it again.
Cllr Barry Tebbutt, cabinet member for StreetCare, said: “We’re carrying out a full investigation and have reported this to the Health and Safety Executive – we’re going to get to the bottom of this.”
