Romford Market was forced to close early this afternoon (Wednesday) due to bad weather.

The historic town centre market couldn’t remain open in the windy conditions.

Twitter user @romfordmarket said: “Due to the hideous weather and the stalls collapsing, Romford Market is now closed. Sorry Guys, we’ll be back Friday! Be safe!”

Tony Geary, the outgoing Romford chairman of the national market traders federation, said: “I think it was the right thing to do, there were a couple of stalls which almost went over, people lost some of their stuff.

“It was one of those freaks of nature which you’ve got to put up with. There were health and safety concerns as you wouldn’t want a bar falling on any traders or customers.”

The decision to close, at around 3.45pm, was made by Havering Council’s market management.
