A West Ham United footballer was chased by motorcyclists claiming to be armed while driving near the club’s training ground.
The player was pursued by two men in Romford Road, Chigwell during an attempted robbery at about 12.45pm yesterday.
Reports indicate the victim was 27-year-old striker Andy Carroll.
Police said motorcyclists tried to block the driver’s car while he looked to escape.
A spokeswoman for the Metropolitan Police said: “The two men threatened the driver and intimated through gesture that they were in possession of a gun.
“The driver of the car – a man aged in his 20s – was able to manoeuvre away and he called police for assistance. The suspects rode off prior to the arrival of police.”
An allegation of attempted robbery was then filed, but no arrests have yet been made.
In a statement, West Ham United confirmed one of its players was targeted and that police are now handling the incident.
Rebridge CID is investigating.
