Excited onlookers witnessed a moment of history when Upminster Windmill’s cap was removed as part of on-going restoration works on Friday.

Now, a video showing the removal has been published on YouTube, showing the nine-tonne cap being carefully separated from the body of the mill.

The mill’s sails were removed on Thursday, and now both sails and the entire cap will be transported to Holland where a master mill-wright will painstakingly restore the mill’s wood and mechanisms.

For a full report on the restoration’s progress, pick up a copy of the Recorder on Friday.
