If fake tan, false eyelashes and big hair isn’t what you want to greet your date with this Valentine’s Day, then maybe the retro look is for you.

Lauren Martin, owner of vintage clothes shop The Vault in the Quadrant Arcade, Romford, is helping women to get ready tomorrow today with a makeover day dedicated to styling those who want to look a little bit special for the occasion.

She said: “I think this is a fun way for people to try the vintage look for themselves and to get the whole experience of getting your hair and make-up done ready to go on a date in the evening.”

The 29-year-old invited me down to her shop to test out the full-om 40s makeover for myself and I wasn’t disappointed.

I was stripped of my day-to-day look by make-up artist Jenny Lam who decided to heighten my pale complexion, add a flirty eyeliner flick and some bright red lips to give me some va-va-voom.

My hair was then curled with straighteners and pinned up before both Jenny and Lauren picked out my outfit – a classic blue and white polka dot dress with a matching pearl bracelet and necklace.

It was at this point that I saw myself in the mirror for the first time since we started and despite my reservations, the style was something I could get used to.

Lauren said: “This is definitely the sort of thing women would have worn if they were going on a night out.

“You don’t have to get dressed up in the full retro gear but girls should be able to feel comfortable pairing a classic fur coat with a Primark dress and not worry about it not having a brand name.

“If you want to enjoy getting your hair and make-up done with a free glass of bubbly in your hand and cheesy love songs being played in the background, then you know where you’ve got to be this Valentine’s Day.”

The Vault’s vintage makeover session will take place from 1-4pm today.
