Thirteen people fled a high street building moments before it went up in flames.

An onlooker captured the fire as it ripped through a maisonette above shops in Station Road, near St Mary’s Lane in Upminster last night.

Fire crews were called just before 9.30pm to the scene, and found residents from nearby properties had already escaped.

It took 35 firefighters, six engines and three and a half hours to bring the blaze under control.

Part of the second floor and the roof was damaged and crews carried out salvage work in the neighbouring shops and properties.

Firefighters from Romford, Hornchurch, Dagenham, Barking and Harold Hill attended. There were no injuries and investigations are ongoing to find out what caused the fire.
