A councillor says she is looking forward to helping charities for the next year after she was chosen to become the next mayor of Havering last night.

Councillor Linda Van den Hende has been elected as the mayor for the next 12 months following her role as deputy mayor under Councillor Philippa Crowder.

Mrs Van den Hende - an Upminster councillor since 2006 - will be joined by her husband Mr Lawrence Chalk as her consort.

She said: “I have discovered a lot about Havering while being deputy mayor and look forward to my year in office, and in particular, continuing to meet so many local people and voluntary organisations.”

Mrs Van den Hende has announced that one of her chosen charities which she will be supporting during her term will be First Step, a Hornchurch-based charity supporting disabled children and their families.

First Step was former mayor of Havering Councillor Brian Eagling’s charity of choice two years ago and the Recorder launched a year-long campaign to raise money for the worthy cause in 2015.
