A 22-year-old man was arrested and charged with shoplifting in Upminster – thanks to the radio system that links shops and police officers.
Staff at the Iceland supermarket used the “town link” system to contact Upminster Safer Neighbourhoods Team.
PCSO Rian Black answered the call and was able to get to the shop in time to apprehend the alleged shoplifter.
PC Mark Edwards of Upminster SNT said: “We are very pleased with how the town link radio system operates and it is proving to be a useful tool in our fight against crime.
“If any store in Upminster would like to know more, they should speak to us by phoning 101 – or pop into our ward base for a chat.”
