A WOMAN died following a road crash in Wennington on Monday night.

The woman, believed to be in her 60s, died after the car she was travelling in collided with a van on the A1306 New Road at about 6.30pm.

A blue Ford Fiesta was travelling westbound along New Road and due to turn right into Sandy Lane when a white Fiat van travelling east in the opposite direction along New Road were in collision.

Five people were in the Fiesta, including the female rear-seat passenger who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Another woman, also a rear-seat passenger, who is in her early 20s, was taken to an East London Hospital where she remains in a critical condition.

The male driver and two other male passengers were uninjured.

There was only the driver, a man, in the Fiat van, who was treated for minor injuries.

New Road was closed to the north of the junction with Sandy Lane until about 8.45am on Tuesday while emergency services crews attended the scene and dealt with the casualties.

Two people were trapped and had to be cut free by fire crews using specialist cutting equipment and were taken to hospital.

A post mortem is due to be held at King George’s Hospital Mortuary on Thursday October 28.

An inquest will be opened and adjourned in due course.

There have been no arrests.

The incident is being investigated by the Road Death Investigation Unit based at Chadwell Heath Traffic Garage.
