Engineers are trying to restore power to one remaining shop in Romford’s South Street after nearly 10 were left in the dark following an earlier outage.

The power went off at six shops at approximately 11am and work carried out by the engineers caused a further three to be without power.

Barclay’s bank was forced to close its doors until power resumed and a witness told the Recorder that a salon’s customers were left with half-finnished hairdos.

Lorraine Moss, who works on South Street, said: “Quite a few shops are affected. In one salon there are women sitting there with their hair half done.”

A spokesman for electricity cable maintenance UK Power Networks apologised for the outage.

She said: “We are sorry for any inconvenience this is causing.

“UK Power Networks engineers restored power supplies to all except one property at 2.32pm today.

“Work is continuing to reconnect the final supply as quickly as possible.

Six customers had been affected initially at 11.15am and we had to isolate supplies to a further three properties at 1pm to safely carry out repairs to an underground cable.”
