“Several” under-18 footballers and a pregnant woman were involved in a car crash at the Devil’s Head crossroads yesterday morning, according to Essex Police.

Following the smash, one person was taken by ambulance to Basildon Hospital with minor injuries.

The incident involved a Citroen Xsara and a silver convertible Mercedes, and took place at about 10.50am. Police said the driver of the Citroen was reported for motoring offences but not arrested.

It is not known which vehicle the players were in, but the pregnant woman – who was not thought to be injured – was travelling in the Mercedes.

Firefighters were also called to the scene.
