THE jailing of seven young Tamils for gang violence (Life sentence for Samurai sword attack, Recorder, July 25), while absolutely necessary, highlights the alienation many young ethnic youths feel towards society.

For some, such as the Tamils, whose families have escaped persecution, there is a feeling of being unsettled.

Unlike many immigrants, Tamils came here reluctantly but found it too dangerous to stay in Sri Lanka.

Most Tamils are concerned and worried about the Government bombings and disappearances of family and friends back in Sri Lanka.

Not everyone is able to juggle their feeling of being both British and Tamil Sri Lanka. Some, particularly the young, find it difficult to feel at one with British society while their family is so concerned with what's going on at home.

A minority turn to crime as a way of making their mark in society.

While answers to crime must be found, it might help the Tamil community if the British media were to report more truthfully the persecution that goes on in Sri Lanka. - Nakkeeran Arasaratnam, Sri Lanka Media Service, Hornchurch.
