Storms caused more chaos on Saturday morning as metal panels fell from the roof of a tall building, crashing onto the pavement below.

Police were called to Station Road, Upminster, at 8.30am after reports of debris falling from the flats above the Marks and Spencer store.

London Fire Brigade and Havering Council assisted officers in dealing with a large piece of metal hanging off the roof of the building - after one panel had already fallen.

Station Road was closed for about 30 minutes between Ingrebourne Gardens and St Marys Lane while the roof was made safe. The adjacent Branfil Road was closed for more than three hours.

Marks and Spencer store manager, Ellie Worsfold, said: “One bit of metal fell off and so the police shut the road for health and safety reasons.”
