A car that crashed into a lamp post in Gidea Park on Friday (August 3) had been stolen during a burglary the day before, the Recorder can reveal.

Police officers were called to Balgores Lane at 1.03pm to find the badly damaged vehicle, which had been abandoned, blocking the road.

The driver of the vehicle had fled the scene on foot before emergency services arrived.

Initial enquiries soon identified the vehicle had been stolen off a residential drive on Thursday, August 2 following a burglary.

The car is now being examined by forensic experts as investigators attempt to trace the driver.

Anyone who witnessed the accident on Friday can contact the police on 101.
