Dagenham & Redbridge boss believes in-form Brian Woodall will only get better

Fans’ favourite Brian Woodall scored in both games over the Easter period to push Daggers closer to their safety target – but boss John Still believes the Victoria Road faithful are yet to see the best of their top-scorer.

Woodall netted a stunning goal two minutes from time against Burton Albion on Friday to rescue a point in a 1-1 draw for his side and followed up with his 10th goal of the season in the 2-1 win against Gillingham on Monday.

The former Gresley forward has played some part in 35 of Daggers’ 42 league matches this year, plus a further seven games in cup competitions.

And Still believes if he had been able to use the 24-year-old more sparingly his impact could have been even greater.

“I feel for him because he should be the one coming on in lots of the games, he’s still learning, but he’s responding fantastically and he will continue to improve,” said the manager.

“If the season had gone how we hoped it would have gone, he would have started a game, then had a rest, then played a couple.

“If we were able to do that earlier in the season I think he would be even better than he is now.”

With Daggers’ forward line decimated by injuries throughout the season, Woodall has been the only constant figure, despite struggling with a groin problem himself.

But the future would appear to be bright for the target-man and Still believes once his senior team-mates return to fitness that will only aid Woodall’s development.

“His hold-up play is good and he’s got an eye for a goal,” said Still.

“We’re still trying to teach him about when to get in the box, he’s still a bit unsure. But playing with a more experienced player would help him to do that, but unfortunately we haven’t had an experienced player for him to play with.

“Josh Scott has been a big help in training. Sam Williams would be a big help if he was playing, because Sam’s hold-up play is good and that combination would be good.

“Brian’s learning from people virtually as experienced as him, but he’s done well.”
