There was a real buzz at Upminster’s annual Stewart Avenue allotment fun day on Saturday.

About 300 people came through the gates to enjoy the stalls and face painting – as well as the Essex Wildlife Trust’s beehives, which wowed the youngsters.

“Overall the day went very well,” said secretary Janette Watts.

“We’re shut behind the big gates most of the time and people wonder what’s going on – so it was interesting for people to come and see what we do.”

If you’re interested in a plot, turn up to one of the society’s monthly gate sales.

They take place on the third Saturday of every month from 10am until noon, with surplus produce for sale.
