Friday the 13th was most definitely lucky for some, thanks to the St Francis Hospice lottery.

Gerard Hughes, 60, of Romford, scooped the Havering-atte-Bower charity’s rollover prize of £4,000 on December 13, while retired PA Irene Herbert, of Chigwell, netted the first prize of £1,000.

“I signed up for the hospice lottery after I saw a newspaper advert,” said Gerard. “My father had also been a volunteer at a hospice in Leeds so I know they need support.

“It’s a lovely time to win and means I can get some nice presents for my teenage children.”

The cash couldn’t have come at a better time for Irene, either.

“We had about three leaks indoors and because of that we had finally decided we had to get our bathroom fixed,” she explained. “We had spent money doing that only to then see our garage roof blown off in that recent big storm – so this money will really come in handy.”
