Six people escaped from a blaze that caused significant damage to a terraced house in Romford, on Saturday evening.

One man was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene, in Marks Road, and another was taken to hospital.

The fire, believed to have been started by a candle, has caused significant damage to the roof and first floor of the property.

London Fire Brigade (LFB) was called at 11.26pm – 21 firefighters from Romford, Hornchurch and Dagenham had brought the fire under control by 1.04am.

The blaze has prompted warnings from LFB for people to take care with candles during the festive season.

During 2013/14 six people died and a further 61 were injured in fires started by candles.

Statistics released by the brigade show there is an average of 21 candle fires a month between February and October but this rises dramatically to 29 fires a month during November, December and January.

Community safety group manager, Mark Hazelton, said: “At this time of year many people will be lighting candles as part of their festive decorations but if you don’t use them safely it could spell disaster for you and your family.

“You should always make sure candles are placed in a proper holder on an even, heat resistant surface and that they are kept well away from anything that could catch fire like clothing or curtains. Mixing candles and too much alcohol can also be catastrophic so don’t use them if you’ve had a lot to drink.”
