There will be fun for all the family while seeing the Olympic Torch pass through Brentwood and Herongate next month.

The Olympic flame will pass through the borough on Friday, July 6, and will visit Herongate starting in Rectory Lane at 5.41pm and ending in Common Road at 5.55pm. It will start in Brentwood at 5.58pm in The Avenue and finish in Middleton Road at 6.21pm.

A host of activities have been planed to mark the event, including: an Olympic themed village fete with traditional games being staged on the Cricket Green, Herongate, from 3.30pm by the Herongate and Ingrave Olympic Torch committee.

There will be a community BBQ and activities supported by Brentwood and District Evangelical Fellowship and Brentwood Rotary Clubs on Shenfield Common, Ingrave Road, between 4.30pm and 7pm. There will be inflatables and sessions organised by local sports clubs.

Brentwood Cathedral, in Ingrave Road, will host face painting, BBQ and a range of other activities between 4pm and 7pm. There will also be a screen in the main hall for people wanting to watch the Olympic Flame’s journey through the borough.

And Brentwood Academy Clubs will be offering children from years five and six the chance to be coached in a variety of sports at the Old Cricket Ground, Shenfield Road, between 1.30pm and 7.30pm.

People cheering on the Olympic Flame and the torchbearers can also get involved in the fun by dressing up, painting their faces and making hats in line with the theme of

Brentwood Council is advising residents to leave their cars at home and walking or cycling if its possible on the day.

Chair of Brentwood Council’s retail, community and culture panel, Cllr Mark Reed said: “This is going to be an historic occasion and we want as many people as possible to be able to get involved.

“There will be a range of fun sporting and community activities available for people of all ages to help everyone really enjoy the spectacle. I think that Brentwood has got so much to offer that we can give the torch the biggest welcome ever, and show why we are so lucky to live in one of the best boroughs in the country.”
