Romford shoppers donated more than 500 in two hours on Saturday – in support of a police officer who has been in a coma for a year and a half.

Katie Habberley, from Dagenham, who is now 27, slipped into the coma weeks after her first wedding anniversary to husband Mark, having complained of headaches that wouldn’t go away.

Katie’s mother-in-law Bronwen Habberley, 59, said: “She had a headache that got worse as the weeks went on. She bought over the counter remedies, but they didn’t seem to help.”

The officer, who is based at Limehouse police station, was 26 when she collapsed and was admitted to Queen’s Hospital on August 21, 2010. Within two days she was placed in intensive care.

Bronwen added: “They have had a lot of bad press lately, but Queens were absolutely fantastic. I couldn’t fault them.”

Katie remains in a coma, although signs show she may be coming through, however the recovery period will take many months.

Bronwen decided to raise money for the Encephalitis Society, who provide care and support 24/7 for families affected and long term support for recovering patients.

Mangers at the Asda supermarket, in Romford’s Mercury mall, let Bronwen raise the cash, on Saturday.

The money was raised through tombolas, showing pictures of Katie and describing to the public what happened and how the charity can help people who are suffering from the inflammation of the brain.

Bronwen managed to raise an incredible 500 in just two hours and said: “It was a brilliant day. One couple that came over were fantastic and I was really touched by their support.”

She added: “My employers are brilliant. Anytime I need off they are understanding.”

The Encephalitis Society supports adults and children affected by the brain inflammation, by providing supports and advice.

The charity also raises awareness and conducts research into the condition.
