Veterans raised more than 2,000 for needy servicemen last week.

Members of the Romford and District Branch of the Royal Marines Association, spent two days collecting money at Tesco, Gallows Corner.

The funds raised were for the Royal Marines Charitable Trust, to help servicemen and women injured in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the families of those who have lost their lives there, as well as to veterans of previous conflicts.

Branch chairman, Les Wright, said: “Although these are very difficult times for everyone financially, the shoppers at Tesco’s donated an amazing 2,556 on the two days, and I thank them sincerely for their generosity.”

He added that he wanted to thank the Store Manager Alistair Williamson, as well as Clover Deacon, community champion and all the staff at the store for their continued support of service personnel.

The Royal Marines Association is a registered charity and the local branch meets at Hornchurch Royal British Legion, High Street, on the third Wednesday of every month at 8pm.
