Romford residents given illegal parking fines after contractor mishap

Hundreds of pounds worth of illegal parking fines have had to be recalled after a contractor marking out white lines missed out one whole road.
Bemused car owners of Rush Green Road, Romford, were anxiously checking their post this week after word got round that neighbours had received fines for parking on the curb of the pavement outside their homes – despite that being the norm.
In fact, it was a misunderstanding caused by the new council parking scheme in the area that was supposed to include new bays in the street.
Ann Stuart, who was slapped with a £110 fine, said: “I have lived here for 20 years now and have never had any trouble like this. I have always parked in the exact same spot and nothing has ever been said, which made me even more confused when I saw the fine.
“If the council are going to change the rules then tell us about it, don’t just do it without our knowing. If they haven’t changed anything, then why are they causing us so much hassle?”
Cllr Robert Benham said: “It was my belief as a resident of Rush Green Road for over 34 years that the tickets were issued in error, so I immediately contacted the head of streetcare, sent the information and photos and asked him to review the situation as a matter of urgency.”
It was discovered that Havering Council specifically ordered this area to be remarked, but the contractor who drew lines in the surrounding area missed this road entirely.
Ann said: “I’m all in favour of new regulations but only if they help make it clear where one can park.
“It’s just typical that they forgot to paint some lines and assumed it was our mistake and not theirs!”
PCNs have since been cancelled and residents have been sent letters to confirm this.
The council are suspending any parking enforcement in this area until the correct markings are reinstated.
