Staunch Royalist Andrew Rosindell MP took to the airwaves today to declare “children need to be taught just how lucky they are to be part of Britain.”

Speaking to LBC’s John Stapleton, the Tory, who is famed for giving out portraits of the Queen, argued patriotism and national pride should be taught.

“This is a wonderful country with a fascinating history and exciting future,” he said. “It has survived because of a successful set of tried and tested values, which must remain at core of everything we do”

“Across the world, children are taught to love their countries and to stand shoulder to shoulder under their national flag.

“In Britain, we seem to only become patriotic at football and rugby games. We need children and adults, to feel part of something magnificent. Our flag and national anthem gives us all – irrespective of background – something to look up to and rally around.

The MP also said youngsters should be taught how important it is to get involved with democracy by voting once they reach 18.

In 2012 Mr Rosindell introduced his UK Borders Bill to the Commons in an attempt to ensure a portrait of the monarch was displayed at all international entry points to the UK.

The bill, which was not passed, also sought to rename the UK Border Agency “HM Border Police” to “reflect and recognise the role of the Queen in protecting the border of the land she reigns.”
