Seventy firefighters were called to a blaze in a disused warehouse in Freshwater Road, Dagenham in the early hours of this morning.

The fire is currently affecting part of the two storey disused building’s first floor.

Crews in ten fire engines were called to the scene at just after 3am today.

Firefighters from Dagenham, Romford, Plaistow, Hornchurch, Ilford and Homerton fire stations are at the scene.

Station manager Paul Hobbs, who is at the scene, said: “Our crews are working hard to bring this fire under control and we are now making good progress. As well as ten fire engines, we are using an aerial appliance to help us gain access to the roof. “Thankfully there are no people involved and because the building is on an industrial estate there are no nearby houses that have had to be evacuated.”

The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.
