Martin: We need more belief

Romford manager Paul Martin was left disappointed last night as he watched his side lose 4-2 against local rivals Brentwood.

Martin is becoming more frustrated at the naivety and lack of belief his side is showing against the top teams in Ryman Division One North.

He said: “We have to believe we can beat the top teams. We don’t seem to have that belief, but we’re a young team and they’re learning.

“This has to be good for next season.”

Boro once again conceded quick goals which gave them a mountain to climb and effectively cost them the game.

While Martin ordinarily feels this might be a concern, he admits it is probably due to the fact Boro are mid-table playing against teams who still have a lot to play for this season.

He added: “It’s very disappointing because we gifted goals in quick succession, like against Leiston.

“I’m sure it’s not a coincidence that it has happened against two teams that are still pushing this season.”

Martin, nonetheless, was happy with the spirit shown by his team, who battled bravely to the end.

But he says the young squad will have to learn the fine lines between winning and losing if they are going to progress again next season.

He said: “We responded well, we certainly didn’t get outplayed, but we just got done by four set-pieces which was frustrating.”

Romford conceded three goals in a 13-minute spell at the Brentwood Arena, as Steve Butterworth, Danny Dafter and Darren Blewitt quickly put the hosts on top.

And Martin admitted the slow start for his side might have been down to concentration levels after some preparation issues leading up to the game. “Preparation wasn’t great last night and we had to shuffle things about,” he revealed.

“The only way to improve on set-pieces is by training, but it’s hard only getting them for one hour a week.

“But no excuses, they’re a strong team and we move on.”

Romford return to action with a trip to mid-table rivals Heybridge on Saturday, before welcoming Maldon to Mill Field next Tuesday.
