Residents will be sleeping rough tomorrow to raise awareness of homelessness in the community.
Sleep Easy, an annual event run by the YMCA, will take place outside the charity’s Romford branch in Rush Green Road from 7pm until 6am Saturday.
Havering’s mayor, Cllr Eric Munday, will be launching the evening, which will see participants sleep in cardboard boxes.
YMCA staff will be on hand with hot drinks, snacks and breakfast to see them through the challenge.
The Romford site’s communications and events coordinator, Sara Colenutt, said: “Whilst this is a serious issue, the event will be light-hearted and fun.
“We are running a best box competition and are asking participants to bring materials such as wrapping paper, stickers and pens to decorate their boxes.
“We recognise that the event is far removed from the reality of homelessness, but are hoping that it will give people an insight into the challenges that homeless people face.”
Those taking part should bring lots of warm clothing, including hats, socks and jackets.
