Remembrance commemorations have been a national fixture for almost 100 years, and each new generation has carried the torch to ensure their messages are not forgotten.
Pupils at The RJ Mitchell Primary School, Hornchurch, are keenly aware of their connection to the world wars – the school sits on what was the parade ground of RAF Hornchurch, the vital airfield from which many famous pilots flew.
Headteacher Barry Read said: “At RJ Mitchell we are very proud of our heritage and remember those that fell in battle. We are one of only two schools in the UK entitled to wear the RAF tie.
“All our classrooms are named after pilots who flew from RAF Hornchurch, and our motto is ‘Ad Astra’, part of the RAF motto.”
On November 10, at 11am, the school will hold a two-minute silence, with children laying wreaths and reading poems. At Elm Park’s service last year, pupils dressed up as servicemen, nurses and evacuee children.
