Every year schools, shop workers and friends do something funny for money to raise funds for Comic Relief.

This Friday is Red Nose Day and there are a variety of events and activities happening across the borough from people wearing their pyjamas to work, teachers dressing up as super heroes, a cycle challenge and a charity head shave.

On the last Red Nose Day in 2011, which alternates every year with Sport Relief, Havering residents, workers and pupils made money for charity in fun ways.

Jane Fook, of Rush Green, Romford, helped organise a Red Nose Ride from Hacton Park Corner Farm Livery Yard in Upminster. The group of horseriders raised more than £500.

Staff at Sainsbury’s in Hornchurch dressed as cartoon characters and raised £3,544 while Upminster Library held a Comic Relief Poetry Relay. Five groups and the Havering Poetry Group recited poems, some written especially for the relay.

Hornchurch’s Harrow Pub and Hornchurch Hockey Club competed in a 12-hour cyclethon against LDG Fitness. LDG donated £1,000 and a further £300 was raised through donations and sponsorship.

Trampolining groups at Hornchurch Sports Centre raised £150 by wearing costumes during training and Havering College raised £150 through a dodgeball, basketball and indoor football tournament at its Quarles campus.

Renault Romford also held events including a tomato-growing competition, and the dealership donated money for every car purchased on the day.
