Having been labelled as the “new Adele” by viewers, a 20-year-old singer says her confidence is slowly building following her X Factor audition being aired at the weekend.

McDonald’s worker Rebecca Grace, from Rainham, stunned the judges on the hit ITV show on Saturday, as well as audiences at home, when she closed the episode with a rendition of Kelly Clarkson’s Piece by Piece.

She said: “Before I went in, I was terrified.

“It’s horrible, I get so nervous so I was a mess and so scared, because in that moment, my future depended on the judges.”

“That song’s very emotional and it hits a nerve in me with certain lyrics, such as “I made something of myself and now you want to come back”.

“When people found out I was going for the show, all of a sudden they were interested in being my friend when before they didn’t want to know me.”

Rebecca, a former student at Barking and Dagenham College where she studied music, was encouraged to audition for the show which has been running for 14 years, by her friends and family.

After she finished singing, judge Louis Walsh praised Rebecca, saying it was the “perfect song” for her and Sharon Osbourne said she was like a “rough diamond”.

Simon Cowell added: “I’m going to remember you Rebecca because there is something about you that I really like.”

Rebecca said: “Out of all the judges, I wanted to impress Simon the most.

“I feel he would be the one who will do his best for me to get me as far as possible and I want that, I want someone who can push me in the right direction and boost my confidence.

“The judges’ reactions were amazing. I would never have dreamed they would give me the feedback they did.

“I was overwhelmed.”

Rebecca has made it to the next stage of the competition which will be aired in the coming weeks.

“I’m so excited, because I’m slowly starting to feel more confident and I never thought I would get this far.”

The X Factor continues on ITV, Saturday and Sunday at 8pm.
