A “grapplethon” raised more than £1,600 for an anti-bullying charity on Saturday.
Members of the origin Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Academy in Suttons Road Business Park, Rainham, held a 12-hour event in support of Kidscape - performing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu constantly for the duration, with the only stipulation being two or more fighters had to be on the mat at all times.
The event was featured in the Recorder last week, and organiser Mike McDonald was delighted with the amount raised.
“It is truly impressive,” he said, “the funds will help Kidscape massively, to combat against child bullying and sexual abuse issues. The support the team received from friends, family and the local community has been fantastic. Everyone associated with the club would like to thank everyone for the support and generous donations.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu focuses on grappling, or ground fighting, and has become increasingly popular due to Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), which has taken the sports entertainment world by storm over the last few years.
