Staff from the Sanders Draper School hoped to put Hornchurch on the map as they took part in a national TV quiz.

The trio of Lisa Matson, Julie Russell and Ceiri Van Haeften, all from the school’s unit for hearing impaired students, appeared as a team on the BBC2 “Eggheads” show, presented by Jeremy Vine, last week.

They were joined by Ms Van Haeften’s partner Chris Holder and friend Jane Moreland.

The Suttons Lane school’s team didn’t beat the “eggheads” – a rotating group of quiz and game show champions – but Ms Van Haeften did win one of the four rounds.

“It was a fantastic experience,” she said. “We were treated like royalty – being flown up to Glasgow for filming, put up in a lovely hotel and given a make-over.

“Jeremy Vine and the ‘eggheads’ were really friendly and encouraging, and not at all stuffy. They took the time to have a chat with us too before and after the show.

“Although we didn’t win, we had a wonderful time.”
